Danny Marks to open All-Canadian Jazz Festival Port Hope

Blues veteran Danny Marks has signed on to open this year’s All-Canadian Jazz Festival Port Hope, playing a free admission concert on Friday September 19. For the last 20 years Marks has been equally well known for his radio work, on CBC’s Basic Black and as host of the TV show Stormy Monday and radio show Bluz.FM.

Festival music director John McGuirk says in a press release the show “will cover the whole range of blues – traditional blues, country blues, western blues, rhythm & blues – from the beginning right up to rock ‘n roll.” The Festival is now in its seventh year, and details of the weekend programme are being finalized. As in past years, the Festival will showcase a wide range of Canadian jazz talent, presenting more than a dozen of the country’s finest ensembles.

Antoinette Montague

Born and raised in Newark, Antoinette Montague may have just released her first CD, “Pretty Blues” but she has had many invaluable musical experiences. She worked in gospel and r&b ensembles after college, serves as the vice president of the International Women in Jazz, and considers Carrie Smith, Etta Jones, Della Griffin and Myrna Lake to be her mentors. Antoinette has worked extensively in the New York area during the past decade with such musicians as Bill Easley, Norman Simmons, Winard Harper, Wycliffe Gordon, Frank Wess, the Duke Ellington Orchestra and Mike Longo’s New York State of the Arts Orchestra and Lou Donaldson has introduced her to many of his audiences.

She has appeared on the cover of Jazz Improv’s Jazz Guide, and has performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, and many Jazz Societies.

Antoinette is on the Board of the Boys and Girls Club of America, Better Business Bureau, The Jazz Committee of St Peters Church, International Women in Jazz, and the Women In Jazz Festival.

She gives a great, fun filled performance of great Blues, Ballads and surprise tunes you will love to hear.

“She has a powerful voice, the ability to hold long notes without wavering, and a knack for making every song sound bluesy. Antoinette Montague’s delivery is heartfelt, infectious and memorable.” — Scott Yanow, “Los Angeles Jazz Scene”

Recording and releasing “Pretty Blues” on the Consolidated Artists label raised her profile and has given her fame beyond the East Coast. On this highly enjoyable CD, Antoinette Montague is featured belting out blues, interpreting sensitive ballads, combining passion and sophistication, and making every song sound fresh, infectious and topical.

Concert to benefit East Nashville’s Martha O’Bryan Center - July 12 at The Basement

Nashville independent rock bands Hotpipes, The Nobility, and DJ to be announced host a benefit concert July 12 at The Basement to support East Nashville’s Martha O’Bryan Center. While admission is technically free, a “pay what you want” scale for donations is strongly encouraged at the door and inside the club to help benefit the Center.

The Martha O’Bryan Center empowers children, youth, and adults in poverty to transform their lives through work, education, employment and fellowship. Martha O’Bryan Center services are targeted to the 1,856 residents who live in 720 apartments in the James A. Cayce Homes, Nashville’s oldest and largest public housing development, as well as residents of surrounding East Nashville neighborhoods.

Seven year veterans of Nashville’s thriving rock scene, both Hotpipes and The Nobility are hard working bands with their fair share of media praise:
Hotpipes - Gap marketing campaign, Subinev music blog, WOXY
The Nobility - NPR, Music Row Magazine, All Music Guide blog

The Basement is located at 1604 8th Ave South. Ages 21 and over are welcome and the concert begins at 9:30 PM.
